Montalcino History and Wine
a unique panorama
Montalcino is perhaps the city that has remained closest to Siena in contemporary times: history has been intertwined for centuries between the two cities and seals a bond of friendship and loyalty that reached its peak when, during the Sienese War, the capital of the Republic was transferred to Montalcino.
Here the Republic continued to fight for its freedom for another 4 years.
These ties are also strongly felt in the language: here there are remnants of the Sienese of our grandparents, still spoken in the southern area of the province and in the most representative cities of Grosseto, Massa Marittima and in those on the coast far from the border with Lazio.
Thanks to its wonderful position, Montalcino offers views that to define as fantastic is an understatement.
The kitchen offers excellent dishes based on homemade "pici" and well-presented game, wild boar and hare first and foremost.
The locally produced cheeses and cured meats are excellent.
Wine deserves a chapter of its own: Brunello di Montalcino, one of the wines that has achieved the greatest international success in recent decades, with producers exporting to every corner of the planet.
A place rich in history and success stories.
Worth visiting is the Rocca, a vestige of the ancient Republic.
In the surrounding area, don't forget to visit the splendid Abbey of Sant'Antimo, founded by Charlemagne and stunning at sunset when the sun fills it with a beautiful light, an atmosphere made even more sensational during religious services accompanied by the Gregorian chants of the Benedictine Monks.
